Seven countries have been added to the travel red list and none to the green list.

Travellers from Egypt, Sri Lanka, Costa Rica, Bahrain, Sudan, Trinidad and Tobago and Afghanistan will have to complete 10 days in hotel quarantine, at a cost of up to £1,750 per person.

Portugal has been moved to the amber list. Travellers have until Tuesday to return to the UK or face 10 days self-isolation.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said the government was concerned by the rise of the so-called Nepal coronavirus mutation and rising infection rates in Portugal.

He told Sky News that the mutation could mean it was “vaccine-defeating”.
