The UK faces a bitter -6C snow blast - with the white stuff hitting northern hills between December 13 and December 27. In the Met Office long range weather forecast, the forecasting agency has hinted at plunging temperatures and snowfall striking the country just days before Christmas Day.

Maps from WX Charts, which uses Met Desk data, show low temperatures of -6C in Scotland on Monday 9 December. Discussing what lies ahead, the Met Office says: "Some of the showers could be wintry, especially on high ground.

"Later in the month, there are signals that higher pressure may become re-established, with more settled conditions likely to develop, particularly across the south. Temperatures are likely to be around average overall, with colder interludes bringing frost and fog."

Northern England has been earmarked as being in the firing line - with flurries likely at elevated or higher peaks. In the meanwhile, a Met Office forecast for Saturday (November 30) explains: "Staying cloudy and breezy, with some patchy rain and drizzle across northern and western parts of the UK. Turning brighter with sunny spells in places. A very mild day, especially in any sunnier breaks that develop."

Looking ahead to tonight, the forecasters add: "Remaining cloudy with patchy light rain and drizzle at first. Heavier spells of rain moving eastwards into central parts by the end of the night. Very mild and breezy." The Sunday (December 1) outlook adds: "Another mild and cloudy start with rain sweeping eastwards, heavy at times especially in the west. Brighter spells developing behind with showers. Coastal gales in the north."

The outlook for Monday to Wednesday goes on to say: "Rain for some on Monday, then turning colder with wintry showers in the north. A frosty start on Tuesday with rain, sleet and snow later. Rain clearing through on Wednesday."
