Maps show a 700-mile wall of blizzards as the UK looks set to be hammered by a "significant period of cold". The UK is prepared for a severe cold snap with up to 25 cm of snow expected as the Arctic front sweeps south ahead of December's arrival and the start of the Christmas season.

The latest weather models reveal a widespread cold front moving south from Scandinavia, potentially bringing a 700-mile wall of snow. The forecast from WX Charts indicates the mercury is set to plummet, particularly in parts of the north of England.

The mercury could fall to as low as -5C. Scotland is anticipated to see the worst of the white stuff, but the mercury could also plunge with flurries across swathes of Northern England, Wales, and Ireland, too, it is feared by some meteorologists.

The early Met Office forecast for November 15 to November 24 explains: "Still mostly dry on Friday, if rather cloudy across many regions. Turning more unsettled into next weekend with low pressure probably becoming established close to the UK bringing rain or showers to most regions. The heaviest and most frequent spells of rain are most likely in the north and west.

"Drier and brighter spells of weather remain possible, particularly in southern regions. Some wintry precipitation is possible in places, with snow most likely to fall over high ground in the north. The chance of any widespread or disruptive snowfall is very low. Often windy, with a chance of gales at times, especially in the north and east.

"Temperatures probably near or below average with overnight patchy frost and ice." The early short-term forecast for this week, meanwhile, spans Tuesday (November 12) onwards and states: "Dry and bright on Tuesday with overnight frost and fog patches.

"Gradually turning cloudier from Wednesday with outbreaks of rain becoming more likely, particularly in the east."
