UK faces first snow of autumn with two places set to be 'worst hit'
The UK has forecast the first snow of the autumn - as the mercury plunges to 4C with summer set to end. WX Charts is forecasting flurries of the white stuff as the weather takes a downturn across the country with the mercury dropping.
1 to 2 inches of snow is forecast between Fort William and Inverness, Scotland today (Tuesday September 24). A huge weather system of rain, sleet and snow is seen moving across Scotland, according to the maps and charts using Met Desk data.
Met Office meteorologist Alex Deakin said: “We are getting more of a classic jet steam picking up, and the jet stream is getting more lively and it is getting more south shifted, and that is likely to bring low-pressure systems our way.

“There may be a window on Tuesday where much of the UK is fine before this weather system arrives, but it is likely that low pressure will dominate, and the south will be more susceptible to wet and windy spells. Generally, with low pressure nearby some heavy rain is likely and some gusty winds are also possible.”
This evening and tonight, expect showers largely confined to coastal stretches, many inland areas dry with clear spells. Thicker cloud and showery rain arriving across southwest England towards dawn. Chilly in the north, with a patchy frost possible across Scotland and Northern Ireland.
The Wednesday forecast explains: "Cloudy skies and outbreaks of rain will slowly move northeastwards across much of England and Wales. Brighter but cooler for northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland with a few showers."
The outlook for Thursday onwards explains: "Wet and perhaps windy weather affecting most areas on Thursday. Northern Scotland should remain drier, and colder. A showery, blustery and chilly northerly airstream for all on Friday."
A very wet few days, which led to flooding for some, is being briefly replaced with a drier interlude, with further rain likely later this week.
