The Foreign Office has warned people travelling to Greece, as well as those heading to a number of other destinations, in two separate updates on Wednesday. The first alert urges people to "be aware" of potential weather hazards.

A post on X, formerly Twitter, issued earlier today warns: "If you’re heading to tropical regions, be aware of typhoons and hurricanes. Always check the latest weather updates and stay safe!". Government officials go on to explain that natural hazards and extreme weather events like these can not only cause serious damage but also "disrupt a country’s infrastructure, including buildings, roads and bridges, water supplies, drains and communications.

Gov.uk advice continues: "The effects can be more extreme and serious if this infrastructure has not been designed properly to withstand these events, or to protect you while they are taking place." A second travel alert was issued later today, aimed at those travelling to Greece.

Foreign affairs experts are asking anyone travelling to Athens for the UEFA Europa League match between Olympiacos and Rangers FC on Thursday to do three things.

If you are travelling to Athens for the match, you should:

  • plan your movement around the city to arrive at the stadium well in advance of the match kick-off

  • follow the instructions of the local authorities

  • take care of your personal possessions including passports, especially in crowds and on public transport

Further information can be found on Rangers official website here with people being urged to stay up-to-date with the latest information. The football team on their website cautions: "Supporters travelling for Thursday’s UEFA Europa League match against Olympiacos should be aware of the following information."
