UK hit with severe weather warnings as Stoke-on-Trent set for '30 hours of rain'
Forecasters believe it could rain persistently in the Potteries for more than 30 hours - as the UK has been hit with more severe weather warnings. Today the Met Office has issued an additional yellow rain warning for a large chunk of the country after an alert had previously been rolled out for the north east.
And while North Staffordshire is currently outside the zone forecasters are predicting persistent rain will hit the area - just days after it was battered by storms. The weekend saw yellow warnings for thunderstorms and rain - before an amber rain warning on Monday.
Since then and it has dried up around Stoke-on-Trent - but that could soon change. It comes as a large part of the north east is under a yellow rain warning between midnight and 11.59pm tomorrow while a new yellow alert taking in the whole of the south up to around Nottingham will run from 5pm on Thursday to 10am on Friday.

Such a warning denotes the chance of heavy rain, flooding, disruption to transport - and power cuts.
Paul Gundersen, chief meteorologist with the Met Office, said: “With the rain today and tomorrow potentially falling on already saturated ground a number of warnings for rain have been issued outlining the increased risks for potential impacts. The highest rainfall totals are likely across the Pennines and North York Moors where 80-100mm could accumulate on Thursday, while others within the warning area could see 20-30mm quite widely. More severe weather warnings may be issued over the coming days so it’s important to check the latest forecast for your area”
As reported by StokeonTrentLive, temperatures are dipping in North Staffordshire too with lows of around 5C expected in the area later this week. Brent Walker, deputy chief meteorologist with the Met Office said: “Things will be turning decidedly cooler into the weekend, with frost likely for much of the UK overnight on Friday and a more autumnal feel to daytime temperatures.
“A north-westerly flow of air is developing, bringing cooler Arctic air over the UK and dropping temperatures into the weekend before the next low pressure system pushes across the country from the North Atlantic. This will bring the potential for some very wet and windy weather late on Sunday and into the start of next week, though there is much detail to be determined on the exact conditions so stay up to date with the latest forecast.”
The BBC is predicting rain will sweep in today from roughly 2pm and turn heavy around 6pm. But the Beeb reckons after a brief day spell it could rain from 4am through to around 1pm on Friday.
