UK households with a smart meter warned it is 'worse than first thought'

Energy customers have been warned over smart meters as research suggests the meter failure rate is HIGHER than feared. New official figures show that the total number of smart meters – both for electricity and gas – now installed is at 35.5 million.

But some 3.9million – around 11 per cent - of these were effectively ‘dumb’. This is because they are not using their smart function to provide accurate real time information on energy use and cost to energy firms and householders.

The Director of Energy at Citizens Advice, Gillian Cooper, said its research suggests the smart meter failure rate is higher. "Smart meters can help households save money on their energy bills, but today’s figures show millions are missing out on these benefits because their meters aren't working as they should,” she said.

"This is just the tip of the iceberg. Our research shows 20 percent of households with smart meters still have to submit regular manual readings. And nearly a third experienced issues with their in-home display. Suppliers have been too slow to fix issues with people’s smart meters. We need new rules to ensure energy suppliers identify and fix problems as quickly as possible.”

In response to the warning, a Brit said: "I decided about 2 years ago not to have one fitted and am constantly contacted and hassled by Octopus about getting one! The only thing I'm going to get is another supplier and still wont have a meter fitted."

"In 2017 when talking to a Gas Engineer who was checking installation when moving in, he said that people were being basically scammed, as they do not save money, the installations cause so much time always putting right they were always having to go back, to previous installations. and they had so much trouble they spent going back to trying to get them to work," a second said.

"I have fought a battle with my supplier, insisting that I do not want a meter fitted, after always constantly being pestered and bullied to do so, informing them that Parliament has made installations of these meters Law. Checking my own meters regularly and offers with my suppliers I have saved much more than my friend has, who is constantly worried to death as the meters numbers you see are rubbish.

"They are just a control for the Suppliers. They do not help you at all, as shown by TV Documentary a few months ago."
