UK households urged to 'stock up' on six items before energy price cap rise on October 1
UK households have been urged to stock up on six items before the energy price cap changes on October 1. The energy price cap will rise from the beginning of the tenth month of the year, regulator Ofgem has confirmed amid the Cost of Living crisis.
Martin Clapson, Managing Director at Price Bailey, explained: “While better winter clothes and thicker blankets will be essential for struggling families, buying them at the height of the season is a waste of money. Instead, buying them now could net you a crucial 50 to 80 per cent discount, leaving you with much-needed extra breathing room in your bank account.”
He said: “By planning ahead and purchasing these items in the off-season, you can enjoy significant savings, making sure you’re well-prepared for the cold months without breaking the bank.” He urged households to buy winter clothing, Christmas lights, winter boots, duvets, hot water bottles and heated blankets.

Martin said: “Winter clothing such as jackets, sweaters, and thermal wear take up a lot of space on shelves, occupying valuable store space during off-season months that could be used for seasonable clothing instead."
Buying at the end of the summer season can allow you to invest in quality pieces that would be out of your price range during the winter. Higher-quality winter garments usually keep you warmer and can be worn for longer, meaning you’ll have to invest less money in winter clothing over time.
Martin explained: “Getting wet feet makes your body a lot colder than if they’re kept dry, which makes it harder to warm up once you get home. This creates a vicious cycle. Investing in a good pair of waterproof boots while they’re discounted at the end of the summer season, will keep your feet warm and dry through several winter seasons.”
Martin said: “If you combine these comfort items with heavier blankets and duvets, you can keep yourself toasty all night long without needing your heating on. Although using an electric blanket will add a little to your electricity bill, you only need it on for an hour at most to reap the benefits throughout the night.”
Martin explained: “In peak season, retailers increase prices to unreasonable levels, so I recommend buying all the holiday-related merchandise you can in summer when stores price items cheaply to clear last year’s stock.”
