UK to launch resettlement scheme for Afghan refugees

Boris Johnson will announce a “bespoke” resettlement scheme for Afghan refugees after the Taliban seized control of the country. The programme will be focused on helping women and girls, Downing Street has said. Humanitarian groups warn that women and girls are likely to suffer the most under Taliban control. The scheme will be similar to the one which helped up to 20,000 Syrian refugees resettle in the UK during that country’s decade long civil war. Afghan citizens were seen desperately trying to flee the country on Monday with chaotic scenes at Kabul airport. The UK government has also stressed that its first priority is to help bring British nationals, …dual nationals and local allies to come home. The Home Office said on Monday evening the UK already admitted more than 3,300 Afghan interpreters, staff and their families to the UK.
