ISIL later claimed to have influenced his actions.

Masood, a UK-born convert to Islam, was known to intelligence agencies ahead of the rampage, but was considered a criminal who posed little serious threat.

The 52-year-old went on to commit Britain’s deadliest attack since the 2005 London bombings, ploughing through pedestrians on Westminster Bridge before fatally stabbing an unarmed police officer near Parliament.

At least 50 people of some 12 nationalities were injured. A number were taken to King’s College Hospital London, where Prince Charles visited the staff who have been treating them.

As raids and arrests take place around the UK, vigils have been held to pay tribute to the victims of the attack. Outside Westminster Abbey on Friday (March 24), religious leaders led a minute’s silence at an interfaith ceremony.
