Yahoo News UK records 34 more Covid deaths as almost nine million given second jab
New cases continue to fall as restrictions ease
(REUTERS)The UK has fully vaccinated almost nine million people as another 34 coronavirus deaths are recorded.
A total of 8,931,547 people have received both doses of the vaccine, with 32,574,221 given at least one dose.
The UK's official death toll now stands at 127,225.
Government data also showed that 2,596 more new cases of the virus were detected, down from 3,568 recorded on the same day last week.
The success of the vaccination rollout means that one in six UK adults are now fully vaccinated against Covid-19, with more than two million second doses delivered in the past seven days, latest figures show.
A total of 8.9 million people have now received both jabs – the equivalent of 17.0% of the adult population.
It comes as 77 new cases of the Indian variant of coronavirus have been detected in the UK.
Public Health England (PHE) reported that 73 cases of the B.1.617 variant have been found in England, as well as four cases in Scotland, which an expert said could be a cause for concern.
Officials have currently designated it a “variant under investigation” (VUI) rather than a “variant of concern” (VOC), such as the Manaus (Brazil) or South African variants.
Officials said there is currently no evidence to suggest that disease from the newly identified variant is more serious than previous ones, nor is there current evidence to suggest vaccines are less likely to work against it.
The figure of 77 cases comes from the latest update of PHE’s surveillance of the distribution of different variants across the UK, based on data up to April 7.
It is understood that the cases detected in England are dispersed across different parts of the country and many are linked to international travel, but investigations are under way.
