UK tourists to 'boycott' Spain over new 2025 rules and 'will visit Turkey instead'
UK tourists have announced they will "boycott" Spain in a major blow for the European Union holiday hotspot. Rules will require hotels, travel agencies, campsites, car rental companies and even accommodation apps to collect comprehensive customer data, including home addresses and bank card details of holidaymakers.
The regulation, known as the Royal Decree 933/2021, was introduced in 2023, but a lengthy delay has meant it will only kick in now. One commenter wrote: "Boycott Spanish islands altogether, rather go to Turkiye anyway." Another added: "No great loss there. I hated my two weeks on holiday there."
Another commenter wrote: "Simples! Just don’t go there! Let them suffer the loss of English dosh!" A spokesperson for the Interior Ministry previously said: "It is justified for the general interest for the security of citizens against the threat of terrorism and other serious offences committed by criminal organisations."

CEHAT, whose recent request for the details to be relaxed was denied, told The Telegraph: "Spain is already the only country in the EU where hotels must send guests’ ID info to the police, while in other countries they just have to keep that data for a period.
"Not only could it violate fundamental privacy rights, but it also threatens to complicate and hinder the experience of millions of visitors who choose Spain as a destination." Another Brit sniped: "Spain despite being in the EU - free movement etc often asked hotels etc for passport details of all guests, the UK when we were in the EU insisted on more security through the EU , the EU have passed all the laws we wanted and now the far right edia are complaining about it?
"FGS , we're also intrducing similar controls but the UK being UK." Another fumed: ""THEY" don't want people travelling to Europe and seeing how their economies are doing so much better than our." Another said: "Just accept that many Spanish people don’t want tourism. Get over it, move on and stop carping. Living in Britain is like being abroad these days and you will meet more foreigners than in Spain."
