UK tourists fight back with 'one in four' considering cancelling holiday

UK tourists are fighting back with as many as one in FOUR thinking of cancelling their European Union holidays next summer. New research from Confused.com reveals that over a quarter (28 per cent) of UK holidaymakers are reconsidering travel plans due to rising tourist tax charges.

In Berlin, Germany, the tourist tax is 5% of total accommodation costs while in Frankfurt, Germany it costs €2 per person, per night. Amsterdam, Netherlands has a 12.5% of the accommodation price tourist tax while Vienna, Austria has 3.2% of the total accommodation cost.

Paris, France has a tourist tax ranging from €2.60 - €10.73 per person per night (based on the level of accommodation) while Prague, Czech Republic charges CZK 50 per person, per night and Budapest, Hungary charges 4% of room price Zurich.

Switzerland charges CHF 2.50 per night, Geneva, Switzerland charges 3.75 francs per person per night and Bruges, Belgium will charge UK tourists €3.75 per person, per night. This rises to €5 per night for hotels and €4 per night for other accommodation in Bruges,

Alvaro Inturmendi, travel insurance expert at Confused.com commented: “ Christmas markets are a popular holiday for holidaymakers to enjoy the festive season and explore new cities. But what many aren’t aware of is the additional taxes they may have to pay when you get there.

"There’s no fixed cost for this, and it varies by country and city. Planning ahead will make sure you’re not having to dip into your spending money before the trip begins."
