UK tourists have cancelled their Majorca holidays next summer - and said they will go elsewhere. Taking to Reddit, Brits have renewed their threats to the Balearic Islands, saying protests and demonstrations from locals over "overtourism" have left them feeling unwelcome.

"I have cancelled my planned holiday to Majorca in September and will be heading to Madeira instead, the last thing I want to do is to go somewhere I'm not welcome. I've never been to Majorca, it was on my list, happy to take it off. The thing is though, I buy 5 star, I eat in nice restaurants, I use the spa facilities, I'm not sure that me and my family are the 'type' of tourist they are sick of, but are probably the first ones they'll scare off. The binge drinkers in Magaluf, and the bot bellied Stella drinkers with England flags tattooed on their beer bellies already know they aren't welcome and that doesn't stop them," one holidaymaker planning to holiday in the European Union warned.

"I’m considering selling my apartment because it has become a hellhole to live here. Over the years, every time one has come on the market, it has been bought by investors. Now, 6 of 9 are used for short term renting," a second agreed.

Another said: "UK, rental prices are nuts so this makes saving a deposit even harder! As for the island, it can't grow it's border so the natural resources and spaces are finite. Add to this that the island has superior infrastructure making it a place to live all year round is hugely attractive. The island is also stunningly beautiful.

"This invites investment esp with the free movement of people/labour for the richer Europeans. The balance becomes swayed towards the richer higher priced properties and locals will ultimately be the ones impacted. Not sure there is an easy solution to this but have huge sympathies with the mallorquín folk."

Brits have been met with "go home" messages scrawled on walls in Majorca this summer. The vandalism took a darker turn when "kill a tourist" graffiti appeared in the east of Mallorca earlier in the year. As well as protests in Majorca, demos have spread further afield.

There have also been protests in Barcelona on the mainland, as well as the Canaries, like Lanzarote and Tenerife.
