UK tourists on holiday in popular Spanish resorts, including Benidorm, have been warned to take precautions when using hotel safes.

Expat and TikTok personality Frank the Stagman issued a warning on his platform regarding hotel safes. In the video, shared two days ago, he explained that a lot of tourists have had money taken from their safes.

He warned tourists that thieves use certain techniques to remove a small amount each day. Frank shared a useful tip to help people monitor their saves.

Speaking to his followers in the video, he said: “Even the safes in hotels are not absolutely secure, a lot of people over the years have told me they’ve had money taken out of their safe, so be careful.

“What I also recommend people do is count the money you put in the safe, write on a bit of paper how much money that you’ve got in your safe, put that bit of paper to the front of the safe inside and then that way you know if there’s something missing from it, you won’t go back the next morning and think ‘Oh I didn’t think I spent that much money yesterday’, that’s what happens and they get away with it.”

He went on to explain why the thieves removed a little bit of money each day instead of a large amount. He said: “You just think why don’t they take all the money, why do they take a small bit of money? Well it’s really simple because if they take the whole lot, you’re going to go mad.

“So if they take it bit by bit, if you leave a 1,000 [pounds] in there they’ll probably take 100, the next day you’re thinking I didn’t spend that much and then the next day they take another 100.

“But if you think about it, if they’ve got a hotel complex with 300 rooms, and they’re doing that in every room…yes you’re starting to see the picture now. And if no one’s reporting it to the police because nobody thinks there’s any issue, but that's quite a big one.”

He urged holidaymakers to double check their safes for any issues. He added: “So be very careful, make sure if there’s anything wrong with your safe go to reception and you make noise, you want to report it and need to report it to the police.”
