UK tourists warned 'be very cautious' as alerts issued for Majorca and Menorca
Authorities in the Balearic Islands have warned people to be “very cautious” after an amber weather alert for heavy rain was issued for Majorca and Menorca. The warning for up to 40mm of rainfall in one hour, comes into force from 9pm tonight and lasts until 6am tomorrow.
Yellow warnings for rain and lightning storms for today and tomorrow are also in force for both islands. Aemet, Spain’s weather agency, warned that the islands were facing “scattered showers and thunderstorms, locally heavy or very heavy from midday onwards”.
Spain’s Civil Protection agency also shared a warning on X, and urged people to stay updated on the alerts, adding “be very cautious”. The warnings remain in place for today and tomorrow, but by Friday conditions should have improved with alerts no longer in force.
READ MORE: Number of people missing in Valencia stands at 89 one week after deadly floods
The warnings come a week after heavy rainfall hit mainland Spain, causing deadly flash floods in the Valencia region killing at least 217 people. The weather is due to a DANA, an area of isolated depression at high altitude, which has moved across the country.
The effects of the DANA are still being felt across the Balearic Islands and Spina’s Mediterranean coast. Forecasting for November 6, Aemet said: “Only instability is expected to persist in the north of the Mediterranean area, with showers affecting Aragon, Catalonia, the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands, although it is not ruled out that they will end up affecting areas of the Alboran and the Strait of Gibraltar.
“They could be accompanied by storms in the Balearic Islands and Catalonia. They are likely to become strong in the north of the Balearic Islands, although this is not ruled out in the rest of the archipelago and coastal areas of Catalonia and the Valencian Community. “
More rain has been forecast for Valencia and the north east coast, stretching from the north of Alicante up to Tarragona. Yellow warnings are in force from this evening, with up to 20mm of rainfall expected in one hour and they remain in place until midday on Thursday.
