UK weather forecast: Britain set to sizzle in 30C as temperatures rocket over Bank Holiday weekend

Britain is set to sizzle this bank holiday weekend with temperatures rocketing to 30C.

The Met Office predicts London and the south east of England could be double the usual temperature for this time of year, with the mercury hitting near-record levels on bank holiday Monday.

"The average temperature for this time of year is 15C," said a Met Office spokesperson.

"Currently, temperatures are averaging 20C and are only going to get warmer this weekend," they added.

On Saturday, temperatures in the south will be in the mid 20s, with London expecting to be around 25C, while across the rest of the country it'll be slightly cooler, in the low 20s.

However, there is a risk of thundery showers in the build up to bank holiday Monday, with the south east and south west most likely to be hit.

London is expected to remain in the mid 20s on Sunday, before possibly reaching 30C on Monday as thousands head to the capitals parks and open spaces on their day off.

The maximum temperature ever recorded for the end of May bank holiday is 32.8C, which came in Horsham, Sussex, on May 29 1944.

The Met Office believes that record is not likely to be beaten this weekend.

Elsewhere in the country, temperatures are set to be slightly cooler over the bank holiday weekend.

With wind coming from the North East, Scotland is set to sit around the 18 degree mark at the start of the weekend.

In Birmingham the heat will build from 18C on Friday to 26 on bank holiday Monday, while in Newcastle they will start around 14C, rising to 20C.

It comes after the UK baked in the hottest early May Bank Holiday Monday ever recorded. And last month saw the hottest April day for nearly 70 years, with a temperature of 29.1C recorded in St James’ Park.
