UK weather forecast: More than 30 flood alerts issued with downpours to blight UK as thousands make Christmas getaway

Flood alerts have been issued with the UK set to be hit with heavy downpours as thousands of people head home for Christmas.

Torrential rain and gusty winds have been predicted for this week as forecasters warn the wet weather could last until Christmas.

36 food alerts have been issued in locations all across England with the majority of warnings issued for the South West.

The Met office said “heavy blustery showers” will begin tonight, stretching into Thursday and Friday.

It said: “Early frost in northern Scotland will be followed by sunshine and showers across the UK on Thursday. The heaviest and most frequent showers will affect Northern Ireland, western Scotland and northwest England.

“Heavy rain and strong winds will sweep from southwest to northeast on Friday morning, leaving brighter drier weather by Saturday.

“More rain is likely on Sunday everywhere except northern Scotland.”

Forecaster Greg Dewhurst, from the Met Office, said: “It could lead to some difficult driving conditions at times.

“It’s expected there will be quite gusty winds as well.”

As thousands prepare to travel for Christmas arrangements this weekend, roads could prove treacherous for drivers.

Mr Dewhurst added that at this stage, it is “unlikely” there will be a white Christmas as it’s expected to be wet.
