UK weather: Met office issues ice warning ahead of what could be the coldest night of the year so far

The Met Office has issued ice warnings across the UK as the country could see its coldest night of the year so far.

Scotland and northern areas of the UK will see temperatures drop to around -8C on Monday night through to Tuesday morning, according to the Met Office.

On the outskirts of London, temperatures could get to near freezing with the potential for some frost and ice.

“It is quite likely tomorrow morning that lots of people will have to scrape their cars and that kind of thing,” meteorologist Alex Burkhill said.

The country’s coldest night of winter was -10.3C, while the coldest night this year has been recorded at -7.9C.

Snow is forecast for the highlands and high-level areas of northern England, where yellow weather warnings are in place.

Ice is also expected to sweep the rest of the country throughout the day, with a yellow warning in place for much of western England and Wales between 7pm on Monday and 10am Tuesday.

Mr Burkhill said that in London, the forecast for rain combined with the cold temperatures could bring some icy patches overnight.

The wet weather is likely to continue throughout the week until Friday, but temperatures are expected to rise.

“Tomorrow is going to be quite windy and cold with temperatures lower than today, highs tomorrow could nudge a 8C,” Mr Burkhill said. “In the wind going to feel cold.”

He added: “Rain is on the cards. It will often be cloudy, with some rain through Wednesday and Friday but nothing especially heavy.

"For the rest of the week, we’ll see a gradual increase in temperatures to around 13C.”
