UK weather: Tail end of Storm Ewan to bring cold snap, Met Office warns

Temperatures are set to plunge tomorrow with snow and hail predicted in some parts of the country.

Forecasters warned of a "sting in the tail" from winter in the wake of Storm Ewan moving across the Irish sea towards Scotland.

Ahead of the first day of spring on Wednesday, temperatures are expected to drop as low as half the average for this time of year.

Marco Petagna of the Met Office said: "It's going to be a much colder feel across the UK.

"Parts of the country could see hail and snow, especially in the north. Scotland, Northern Ireland and hill tops are the most likely to be affected.

"The first half of the week is going to be quite chilly, with day time temperatures as low as five degrees, which is below the average of seven to nine degrees at this time of year. Night time temperatures are going to drop to just below freezing.

"The tail end of Storm Ewan from Ireland will be bringing wet and windy weather to parts of Scotland, and it's generally going turn colder and more showery across the country."

Brian Gaze of forecasters The Weather Outlook warned that the cold weather could last for weeks.

He said: "Spring could start on a wintry note, with forecast models suggesting a very cold and snowy spell during the first half of March.

"Winter looks like having a string in its tail."

The forecast means travellers could face more road and rail disruption, in the wake of the chaos caused by Storm Doris last week. Planes were grounded and trains delayed as gusts of up to 60mph battered the country.
