After days of gloom, the weather is set to get sunnier but colder. Weather forecasters say that Arctic winds will bring a colder spell towards the end of this week.

The Met Office has said there could be some snow in northern parts of Scotland but the "chance of any widespread or disruptive snowfall is very low."

BBC Breakfast weather forecaster Carol Kirkwood says that as we go through the week it will be mainly dry, there will be more sunshine and it will turn colder by the end of the week.

She added: "Some of us in the northern part of the UK, could even see some wintriness on the hills." Her colleague Stav Danaos said: "After Friday we open the floodgates to an Arctic northerly and the cold air will spread south across most of the country across the weekend."

Daytime temperatures in Cardiff could drop to 9°C by Sunday. The Met Office forecast for Wales this week says:

Monday:

A cool and crisp morning with early hill fog soon clearing to leave a dry and bright day. Plenty of sunny spells, though cloudier at times along the coast through this afternoon. Feeling chillier, with light northerly winds. Maximum temperature 13 °C. Another chilly night to come with widely clear skies allowing patchy fog to form in places and locally frost in rural parts. Still rather settled with light winds. Minimum temperature 4°C.

Tuesday:

Dry and settled with plenty of sunny spells, despite a rather chilly start. Some patchy cloud thickening into the afternoon, and feeling chillier than Monday, with light northerly winds. Maximum temperature 11°C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

High pressure brings further settled conditions this week, with sunny spells interspersed with cloudier intervals. The odd spot of rain may be felt at times, but generally dry and fine.

The Met Office long range forecast for Friday, November 15, to Sunday, November 24, says that it will turn "more unsettled" into next weekend.

It adds: "The heaviest and most frequent spells of rain are most likely in the north and west. Drier and brighter spells of weather remain possible, particularly in southern regions. Some wintry precipitation is possible in places, with snow most likely to fall over high ground in the north. The chance of any widespread or disruptive snowfall is very low. Often windy, with a chance of gales at times, especially in the north and east. Temperatures probably near or below average with overnight patchy frost and ice."
