UKIP Member Suspended Over 'Repellent Views'

A UKIP member who appeared in the party's latest election broadcast has been suspended after allegedly expressing "repellent views" on Twitter.

Andre Lampitt apparently posted racist and anti-Islamic tweets as well as inappropriate remarks about Labour leader Ed Miliband on the microblogging site.

Mr Lampitt's Twitter account has also been suspended.

A UKIP spokesman said: "We're deeply shocked Mr Lampitt has expressed such repellent views.

"His membership of the party has been suspended immediately pending a full disciplinary process."

Sky's political correspondent Jason Farrell said Mr Lampitt is due to stand as a councillor in forthcoming local elections in Merton, south London.

"The party is now frantically trying to stop that from happening," he said.

"The closing deadline is today, so it has to try and withdraw his application.

"It's hoping that if it can't do so today, there may be some kind of grace period."
