A shake-up of childcare rules will be announced this week, aiming to save money for hundreds of thousands of families by allowing staff to look after more children. It is claimed the England-only move could eventually save families up to £40 a week - or 15% - for those who pay £265 a week for a two-year-old, if childcare providers take it up and pass on the savings to parents. Speaking during a trip to Paris where he visited French nurseries that operate a higher ratio of staff to children, the Tory frontbencher sought to reassure parents that childcare providers would not be forced to adopt the changes.
