Ukrainian artist bringing sand animation show to Bristol next week
A Ukrainian artist is bringing a unique 'sand animation show' to Bristol next week. It will be reportedly 'the first time' this type of art show has been toured in the UK, and will be taking place at the Trinity Centre on Friday, September 20, in aid of Ukraine Aid and Welfare.
The two-hour show will see internationally acclaimed Ukrainian sand animation artist, Oksana Merhut, known as the 'Sand Fairy' "captivate" audiences while marking her first ever tour across the UK. She'll also be performing in Swansea, Cardiff, London and Manchester, among others.
Sand animation, described as a "visually enchanting art form", has captured the hearts of many since its popularisation in Ukraine in 2006. With a mere wave of her hands, Oksana can transform ordinary sand into stories and images, set to music.

Oksana, who is founder of the First Professional School of Sand Animation and head of the Center for Animation Art, has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Ukrainian Presidential Order 'Guardian of Ukraine' and the 'Golden Time Talent 2024' award in the UK. With more than a decade of experience, Oksana has performed at more than 3,000 private events across Europe, the US, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan.
Bristol audiences will witness the 'magic' of sand animation up close during her show next week. The first act will see Oksana bring to life Oscar Wilde's 'The Star Child' through sand artistry, narrated in both Ukrainian and English.
The second act, 'Prayer for Ukraine', will showcase her powerful interpretations of current events in Ukraine, offering 'a poignant artistic reflection on the ongoing war'. The event is not just a celebration of art but also a call to support Ukraine, with all proceeds from ticket sales going directly to aid Ukraine during these challenging times.
Tickets cost from between £10.87 and £30.82 depending on ticket type, and children under four go free. You can purchase your tickets here.
