Ukrainian Ballet Dancer Killed in Combat Commemorated at National Opera

A memorial service for Ukrainian ballet dancer Oleksandr Shapoval, who died in combat, was held at the National Opera of Ukraine in Kyiv on Saturday, September 17, according to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL).

According to local news reports, Shapoval, a ballet soloist with the National Opera, died on September 12 during a battle in the Donetsk region of Ukraine.

Local news said Shapoval enlisted in the war as a volunteer and served as a grenade launcher.

“He was a patriot. He made a difference in this theater and in this war,” a mourner told RFE/RL.
