Ukrainian Emergency Services Contain Chernobyl Fires

Ukrainian emergency services said on April 14 they had largely contained grass fires that had broken out near the abandoned Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

State emergency services (SES) worked with the management agency for the Chernobyl exclusion zone in order to contain the flames, which broke out on April 4.

On April 14 the SES wrote on Facebook that there was “no open fire”, only “a slight smouldering”.

The fires came within a short distance of the nuclear reactor, scene of a disastrous meltdown in 1986, and a storage site for radioactive waste, reports said. Credit: State Emergency Service of Ukraine via Storyful
