Ukrainian Mother and Son Reunite on Mother's Day After 74 Days Apart

A mother was reunited with her son on Mother’s Day in a village near Kharkiv after more than two months apart, police said.

Video shared by the National Police of Ukraine shows Halyna Vasylivna of the village of Tsyrkuny, which borders Kharkiv and was occupied by Russian troops, embracing her son, policeman Andrey Sikalenko, on May 8.

Sikalenko had been separated from his family by the occupation for a total of 74 days, according to the police force. On Facebook, Sikalenko called it “70 days of hell.”

“Symbolically, this happened exactly on Mother’s Day,” the post’s translation reads. “Thank you to all the defenders who are defending Ukraine. It is thanks to you that Ukrainians return to their homes every day.” Credit: National Police of Ukraine via Storyful
