These are England's top areas for health, happiness, social equality and economic success

These are the most vibrant communities in England, according to research carried out by accounts Grant Thornton.

The firm’s Vibrant Economy Index measures the balance between economic growth, social equality, happiness and health in areas across the country.

Famous for ancient colleges, punting and leafy meadows, Cambridge was found to be the UK’s most vibrant area, pipping its academic rival Oxford – which came second – to the post.

Leafy London suburb Richmond Upon Thames took the bronze medal.

The study found that prosperity and high earnings weren’t a necessary indicator of health and happiness.

A number of areas in Leeds and London ranked highly for their business and economic output, but suffered from social inequality of poor health levels.

Rural areas performed better overall than their urban counterparts in terms of happiness and health.

Southern areas also scored better than those in the North and Midlands. In the north of England, Newcastle and York were the best performing areas, both achieving high levels of dynamism and opportunity.

Sacha Romanovitch, of Grant Thornton, said: “If we want an economy that works, then it must provide opportunities for everyone. We’re hearing loud and clear the messages about what divides us in the UK.

“That means we need more than ever to build a vibrant economy where people are engaged in their local communities, where communities trust local businesses and local government, and where businesses can invest and grow.”
