UN Vehicles Seen at Kabul Airport as Envoy Returns Following Doha Visit

UN vehicles and a Qatar Air Force plane were spotted on the tarmac at Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul as officials announced that the UN envoy to Afghanistan returned on September 15.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said on Twitter: “Heading back to #Kabul after visit to Doha, UN envoy @DeborahLyonsUN met with Taliban’s Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai & international partners on urgent humanitarian needs, the rights of all Afghans – esp. women’s & girls – & our shared commitment to the people of #Afghanistan.”

Addressing the UN Security Council on September 9, Lyons said, “The economy must be allowed to breathe for a few more months, giving the Taliban a chance to demonstrate flexibility and a genuine will to do things differently this time, notably from a human rights, gender, and counter-terrorism perspective.”
