The 'unassuming little gem' of a cafe in popular seaside village

Butterflys Tea Rooms sit on the main Towyn Road in Towyn and it's a delightful place for a light lunch or coffee if you're passing through. Opposite Ty Mawr holiday park, it's an unassuming little gem, in what looks like a converted house but the brightly-coloured parasols are a giveaway for this smart cafe.

I called in en route to Towyn and was very glad that I did. I parked in a layby across the road as the small car park was quite full.

The temperature was hovering around 21C (70F) so it would have been uncomfortable for me to sit at a picnic table in the midday sun, although some people like it hot. So I decided to savour the sunshine from the coolness of an indoor table.

I ordered ham, egg and chips and the waitress soon came over with the meal which was delicious. It was a hearty slice of ham with two fried eggs. Sign up now for the latest news on the North Wales Live Whatsapp community

The yokes were still runny which was just the job. The chips were chunky but steaming hot, light and fluffy, suggesting they had been well-cooked and to order too.

I couldn’t finish the meat as there was so much of it - tender and tasty though it was. For dessert I went for a slice of a Victoria sponge from the counter. It came with cream and strawberries, if desired.

Very light and sweet it was too and it seemed to go well with the vibe of a late, summer's day. A pot of tea arrived with an exquisitely patterned cup and saucer made of rather classy, fine porcelain - it said underneath that this set came from BHS, (remember them?) - which was a lovely touch.

The decor was very pleasant - wooden tables with white legs, covered by lavender motif table cloths. Bunting added some colour and a white butterfly fluttered past the window, which may or may not have been a Cabbage White.

Norah Jones' delicate ballad Don’t Know Why drifted across the room to add to the chilled, summery atmosphere and it was a fitting end to a lovely meal.

One diner said: "This is one of my favourite places to come when I’m on holiday" to other diners across the room. They replied: "We feel the same".

For what it's worth, I'd also gladly recommend Butterflys Tea Rooms if you're flying through this part of Conwy county. You may enjoy it too.
