An alleged burglar has been arrested in California after forgetting to flush the toilet behind him, police say.

David Jensen was caught after DNA evidence retrieved from the toilet bowl linked him to the crime, according to Ventura County Sheriff's Office

The 42-year-old was arrested in July 2017, nine months after investigators from the Thousand Oaks Police Department responded to reports of a residential burglary.

Detective Tim Lohman told the BBC: “Most people don't assume or don’t know that DNA can be obtained by other things besides hair and saliva.

“We look for any type of evidence that might be left behind.

“Whether it’s a smoked cigarette or a can that may be left behind, we will analyse it.”

Jensen is currently being held in custody at a pre-trial detention facility. His bail is set at $70,000 (£50,000).
