Unforgotten spoilers follow.
But what does yesterday's (March 29) finale mean for the future of the detective drama?
Although fans are still mourning the loss of Nicola Walker's Cass, they needn't worry about the series itself, as ITV has now confirmed that series five will happen "with a new case, and a new 'Partner in Crime'" for Sanjeev Bhaskar's character, Sunny.
Following series four's conclusion – which saw Cassie pass away after sustaining a devastating brain injury in a car crash – ITV has released a statement thanking Walker for her time as "the brilliant" Cassie Stuart and revealing that the show will continue.
"ITV would like to thank Nicola Walker for playing the brilliant role of Cassie Stuart in four series of Unforgotten which has become one of the best loved and most critically acclaimed police dramas on TV," a spokesperson said.
"Nicola and writer Chris Lang decided that Cassie's story would come to an end last night, but that Unforgotten would continue, in series 5, with a new case, and a new 'Partner in Crime' for DI Sunny Khan."
ITV's decision to greenlight another series of Unforgotten comes as no surprise, with the latest outing boasting "record breaking...viewing figures".
The channel revealed that the drama's fifth run averaged 7.5 million viewers for its first five episodes, an increase of more than 25% on the previous series. Some might call that an Unforgettable success.
