How to make a unicorn protein shake

There isn't much out there that isn't at risk of getting a unicorn makeover - hair, cake and even a frappuccino - we just can't get enough.

The mystical creature has worked it's magic all over social media and shows no sign of slowing down. While the frappuccino fad was very unhealthy, gym-goers can rejoice at the latest incarnation: the protein unicorn shake.

This rainbow-coloured fuel combines whey protein topped with goji berry sprinkled, a superfood alternative that's packed with nutrients. Avocado, raspberries, dragonfruit and spiruliana are just a few of the delicious ingredients.

Gone are the days of the functional protein shake - this one will bulk up your muscles and your Instagram likes.


Pink Layer

1 x frozen Pitaya (dragon fruit) packet

1 large handful raspberries

½ cup almond / brown rice milk

¾ scoop Neat Nutrition vanilla whey

Green Layer

8 chunks of pineapple

½ scoop vanilla whey

¼ cup almond / brown rice milk

¼ avocado

¼ tsp spirulina

3-4 ice cubes

Protein Crème

½ cup 0% total Greek yogurt

1 scoop Neat Nutrition vanilla whey


To make the protein crème, simply mix together the Greek yogurt and vanilla whey until thick and smooth and place in the fridge whilst you assemble the shake.

Run the frozen pitaya packet under the hot tap until it becomes pliable; it should be about the same texture as very crushed ice. Put it in the blender with the raspberries, milk and vanilla whey and blend until smooth. Place the shake in the fridge whilst you make your green layer.

In a clean blender place the pineapple, spirulina, avocado, milk, whey and ice into the blender and blend until smooth.

To assemble: start with the pink layer, filling your cup to just over halfway, then with a spoon place a thick layer of your green shake on top before finishing with another small layer of your pink shake. Be careful not to fill this all the way to the top of your cup as otherwise adding your protein crème will make it overflow.

Scoop and swirl your protein crème on last and top with desiccated coconut, crushed cranberries and raspberries.
