Union Street crash: Two in hospital as road stays shut during rush hour

Two people have been taken to hospital after a crash on Union Street. The major road has been closed this afternoon (Thursday, September 12) while emergency services are at the scene of a two-vehicle collision in the eastbound carriageway.

Fire crews, police officers and paramedics were called to the scene, just outside Union Rooms, at around 3.20pm. Two vehicles reported to be a Honda and an SUV were involved in the collision, according to an eyewitness. They told PlymouthLive: "I can say there is four police cars, two recovery trucks and it looks like a Honda civic has mounted the pavement, hit a sign and possibly hit an SUV coming out of flora Street I think it's called."

A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said two people were taken to hospital by an ambulance. The extent of their injuries is currently unknown.

The road is still closed in the city centre-bound direction. Traffic monitor Inrix reports: "A374 Union Street Eastbound closed, slow traffic due to accident from Martin Street to The Union Rooms."

The collision is also causing delays to bus services this afternoon, with many city centre services facing delays of up to 25 minutes. Plymouth CityBus said: "Due to an RTC causing heavy traffic around the city we are experiencing delays of up to 25 minutes on many services. We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

A fire service spokesman said: "We were called at 3.20pm to a road traffic collision involving two cars outside The Union Rooms. Everyone was clear of the vehicles, but the crew gave first aid to one person before two people were taken to hospital by ambulance."
