Political correctness and freedom of speech are in conflict again as college professors threaten to fail students using phrases such as ‘illegal immigrants’, ‘tranny’ and ‘coloured people’.

Washington State University has quickly taken action by banning its teaching staff from such drastic action to protect students’ freedom of expression.

Daniel J. Bernardo, Interim president of Washington State University said in a statement: ‘We are asking all faculty members to take a moment to review their course policies to ensure that students’ right to freedom of expression is protected along with a safe and productive learning environment.’

This decision was taken after Professor Selena Lester Breikss wrote the following in the syllabus for her Women and Popular Culture Class: ‘Use of racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic, classist, or generally offensive language in class, or submission of such material, will not be tolerated – including “The Man,” “Coloured People,” “Illegals/Illegal Aliens,” “Tranny” and so on – or referring to women/men as “females” or “males”.’

While Professor Breikss would correct the use of non-PC language - repeated usage could lead to failing the class and even the academic semester, the Independent reports.

A colleague, Professor Rebecca Fowler, made similar remarks in the syllabus for her Introduction to Comparative Ethnic Studies course banning ‘inappropriate behaviour’ and said: ‘Our society has come to associate ALL unauthorized border crossings with those immigrants originating from countries south of our border.’
