The University of Surrey is in 'an advanced stage' of its international project which involves delivering a new university campus in India. The international branch is planned to be in the central business district of Gujarat, known as GIFT City.

The India-based campus will provide students with higher education courses in business, international finance, computer science, cyber-security among others. According to the University of Surrey; all teaching and academic assurances at the India campus will be provided and spearheaded by its staff.

Professor Max Lu, Chairman of Vice-Chancellor of the University of Surrey said: "The University of Surrey campus at GIFT City will be a shining example of British education excellence and impact, contributing to transnational education in a more globalised world."

"Students can look forward to a world-class education delivered at the heart of a thriving new international finance and technology powerhouse for the region."

According to the University of Surrey, the project will help "cement ties" between the UK and India. Additionally, these campus plans are "closely aligned" with the Government of India's priorities to expand education and become a global knowledge superpower.

Delivery of these plans will make the Surrey university the third UK institution to plan an international campus in GIFT City, with approval already being granted to Queen's University Belfast and Coventry University.

The international campus project will be delivered in collaboration with the transnational education group GUS Global Services (GGS). Ancillary services for the University of Surrey branch, such as student enrolment, campus establishment and operations management will be supplied by GGS.

Professor Max Lu and GGS representatives will be meeting with Gujarat’s International Financial Services Centres Authority in GIFT City on Friday January 31 to progress these plans, with the aim of receiving regulatory approval from the Gujarat-based authority in accordance with international branch campus regulations.

The Gujarat International Finance Tec-City also known as GIFT City is India's first operational 'smart city' and international financial services centre. The city is home to two international stock exchanges which boats an average daily trading volume of $30.6 billion. Additionally GIFT City has become a hub for higher education, being home to a number of Indian and international universities.
