Until I Kill You viewers have said Anna Maxwell Martin’s performance as a woman attacked by a serial killer was "incredible” after seeing the real victim on TV.

The Motherland actor played Delia Balmer in the ITV series — which is based on Balmer's book about living with murderer John Sweeney — and wowed viewers, with some on social media hailing it as "the performance of her career".

A programme telling the real story has now aired, with Balmer appearing in it and sharing what happened herself. After seeing Balmer, fans could not get over how accurate the actor's portrayal had been, with one writing on X: "I thought the performance from Anna Maxwell Martin was stunning. It’s only now that I’m seeing and hearing the real Delia Balmer that I’m realising it wasn’t just stunning… It was INCREDIBLE."

Both the drama starring Maxwell Martin and the ITV documentary — Until I Kill You: The Real Story — depicted the relationship Balmer had with controlling Sweeney, who is now in prison serving a whole life term for the murders of two women, Melissa Halstead and Paula Fields.

They also looked at what happened to Halstead and Fields and the case against Sweeney, who was charged with the killings of both women in 2010 and found guilty of both crimes in 2011.

TV star Maxwell Martin also had a role in the documentary, as she was the narrator.

After seeing and hearing Balmer, viewers doubled down on their praise of Maxwell Martin, saying that on top of her "incredible" acting, she had portrayed Balmer perfectly.

One said on X: "At first I thought Anna’s accent was poor but having since heard the real Delia’s accent I can see how spot on Anna’s was." "Anna Maxwell Martin portrayed her brilliantly!" exclaimed another viewer.

Viewers were moved by the story. (ITV)

"She does have quite a complex accent - just like Anna Maxwell Martin's character had," noted somebody else.

Viewers were also moved by the real story. One wrote: "Watching Until I Kill You The Real Story it is so unbelievable what a human being can cope with. Feel quite sick seeing Delia reliving her hell. Anna Maxwell Martin did an amazing job. Cannot praise her enough."

"God, this is harrowing," said another. "Delia you are a strong brave woman, and I’m so glad you found a happy future after this hell."
