'Unusual' engine house in Cornwall hamlet sells for six times the asking price
A former tin mine engine house in St Day has sold for nearly six times its freehold guide at auction. The crumbling building fetched £35,500 after originally being listed at £10,000.
The stone building, now in a poor state of repair, is next to the well-established United Downs Industrial Park. It was among 173 lots in the latest sale by one of the top five property auctioneers in the UK, Clive Emson Land and Property Auctioneers.
Auctioneer David Henwood said: “This was an unusual property which captured the imagination of bidders at auction. It requires a programme of improvement work for a variety of potential future uses, whether that is for residential or commercial purposes or even for curiosity value, all subject to the necessary consents”

Also in St Day, a freehold parcel of land next to United Downs Industrial Park listed with a guide of £500 plus eventually sold for £10,000 when the auctioneer’s gavel fell. Cornwall Council instructed the sale of the rectangular shaped site. The parcel measures 0.18 hectares (0.44 acres).
