Update your iPhone now - to stop hackers taking it over via Wi-Fi

Apple has released a software update for iPhone which is a rather important one – as it stops hackers taking over your phone via Wi-Fi.

The iOS 10.3.3 update – available as a download for all devices running iOS 10 – addresses a serious security bug in iPhone’s Wi-Fi chip.

The bug potentially allows hackers to take over iPhones as they try to connect to nearby networks – using an exploit called ‘Broadpwn’.

The bug, discovered by researcher Nitay Artenstein of Exodus Intelligence allows hackers to take over phones via the Wi-Fi chip.

Google recently patched the bug in an update for Android, as it also affected LG devices, Google phones and most Samsung flagships.

Artenstein says that hackers would be likely to target such a bug as an easy ‘way in’ to compromise devices.

The software update offers few new features – and may be one of the last before Apple offers upgrades to iOS 11 in autumn.
