Coast guards from the United States and Cuba are searching for a 23-year-old man believed to have fallen off a cruise ship close to the island of Cuba.

Brandon Paul, from Florida City, fell from the ship at around 3am on Wednesday.

The ship, the Carnival Victory, was sailing from Key West to Cozumel, Mexico at the time.

Mr Paul is believed to have fallen from the ship’s eighth deck while it was sailing 33 miles northwest of Pinar Del Rio, Cuba.

The cruise ship stopped to search the scene, along with the Coast Guard Cutter Charles Sexton and Air Station Miami’s HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane. Because the search area is so close to Cuban waters, Cuban search teams have joined the effort.

The ship then sailed on to Mexico.

Cruise ships began sailing from the US to Cuba in May 2016, marking the end of a 50-year hiatus.
