SDLP leader Claire Hanna has said that she was "gurning my eyes out" on a flight to Belfast after hearing the news that Donald Trump had won the US election.

The MP for South Belfast and Mid Down took to X to encourage her followers to "mourn" the result and said that there was "nothing else for it but to crack on".

Claire Hanna has long been outspoken on her views on the President-elect.

"Bleak morning, familiar despair. Whatever the unbearable & gleeful say about ‘elites’, the most vulnerable will feel the brunt of this.

"Look after yourself today & in days ahead we talk about how to protect," she said.

In response to a reply thanking her for her post, she added: "typed while gurning my eyes out on the plane like, but nothing else for it but to crack on x."

In an official statement issued by her party, Claire Hanna also said: "my thoughts today are largely with people in the United States who are fearful about what this might mean for their future. Donald Trump has repeatedly shown himself as someone with little respect for most people or the high office that he once again holds. It’s very disheartening that his divisive brand of politics has been so widely endorsed, but we acknowledge the clarity of the election outcome.

“There is serious concern about what this means for the United States, Gaza, Ukraine and indeed the world. In each, the most vulnerable will likely bear the brunt of the decisions the Trump administration will take.

"Many people will be feeling low today and I hope they will take care. The best response to this is to organise, and to think about the ways that we can help protect community cohesion, security and the planet. The SDLP will continue to champion inclusive, forwarding looking and internationalist politics.”
