Joe Biden remains the bookies favourite for next month's US election, despite Donald Trump's odds receiving a boost following the final presidential debate in Tennessee.

The opponents faced off in Nashville on Thursday, just 12 days before polling day and more than three weeks since their chaotic first meting on the debate stage .

Their meeting in Music City was a quieter, less shouty affair, with some actual policy discussion cutting through the pair's mutual animosity and Mr Trump's torrent of misleading or false statements.

Bookmakers cut Mr Trumps's odds following the debate, suggesting more bets were being placed for him to win the election.

However former vice president, Mr Biden kept his lead with final debate odds of 1/2 against Mr Trumps's 15/8, according to Oddschecker.

On Friday Betfair Exchange revealed that a UK-based customer had placed a £500,000 bet on Mr Biden winning the 2020 US election at 8/15 to return £775,000.

The top 10 biggest bets have been placed for Mr Biden, but more money in total has been placed on Mr Trump, the company said.

The Democrat has been backed to the tune of £74 million, while total bets on his rival are currently at £83 million.

Betfair spokesperson Sam Rosbottom said: “A customer has just placed a record-breaking £500k bet on Joe Biden on Betfair Exchange at 8/15 odds, breaking records for this campaign.

"The wager is the latest significant stake on a Biden win and as far as one political bettor is concerned at least, the Democrat challenger has never been in a stronger position for victory.”
