Yahoo News US mum arrested for trying to trade her one-year-old daughter for a 1992 car
A mother in the United States had been arrested after apparently trading her one-year-old daughter for a car.
Alice Leann Todd was held after trying to give up her baby to a couple in exchange for a 1992 Plymouth Laser car.
The 45-year-old has been arrested with the unlawful sale, surrender, or purchase of a minor.
Two other people who were caring for the youngster - Tina Marie Chavis, 47, and Vicenio Mendoza Romero, 53 - are also facing the same charges.
The incident, in North Carolina, happened in 2018.
Officers were alerted after the young girl was subsequently taken to a hospital with bruises.
Medical staff contacted police who questioned Chavis.
She claimed to be the child's biological mother, then adoptive mother, but could not provide any documentation.
Police officers were then able to establish that the child had been swapped for the vehicle.
The child is now two years-old.
The trio are due to appear in court later this month.
All three are being held in jail on $50,000 bonds.
The child has now been put in care of another family member.
An advert for the car said: ‘The Laser gains all-wheel drive as an option that greatly improves handling.
‘Front and rear styling changes include headlights, tail lamps, and a new rear spoiler on turbo models.’
Online the vehicle sells for anything from £5,200 to £11,000.
