An American police officer has been struck off over shooting dead a 15-year-old as he and his friends drove away from a house party, it has been reported.

Jordan Edwards was hit by a bullet fired through a passenger window in Balch Springs, Texas, on Saturday night.

Police said they had been called following reports of drunken teens in the area and heard gunshots at around 11pm on Saturday.

Officer Roy Oliver opened fire on the vehicle which was being driven by Jordan’s 16-year-old brother, Buzzfeed News reported.

The stricken teen was rushed to hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Balch Springs police chief Jonathan Haber told local media on Tuesday that Oliver had been fired after “violating several departmental policies.”

He also apologised over reports that the teenagers had “aggressively driven the car towards police.”

He told Buzzfeed: "I made a mistake and I apologised for it.”
