US Senate to vote on border security and Ukraine aid package early next week

Next week, the U.S. Senate will vote on a bipartisan bill that includes additional spending to the Mexican border security and aid to Ukraine and Israel, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced on Feb. 1.

"We cannot simply shirk from our responsibilities just because the task is difficult," Reuters quotes Schumer.

He added that the text of the bill would be released this week, with a preliminary vote scheduled to take place by Feb. 7.

U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson will not accept any border security agreement reached between the Senate and the White House that could unlock aid for Ukraine, Fox News reported on Jan. 16.

Biden urged legislators to immediately pass a national security law containing $61 billion in aid for Ukraine and warned of the strategic consequences of further delays.

U.S. aid to Ukraine “hangs by a thread” due to the Republicans' influence by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who demands the party reject a compromise immigration deal, the Financial Times reported on Jan.26.

Johnson often discusses border security with Trump, including a conversation prior to a meeting Biden dedicated to the border and aid to Ukraine, he said on Jan. 19.

A bill to fund aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan totaling approximately $106 billion failed a procedural vote in the U.S. Senate on Dec. 6. due to Republican demands for stricter immigration policy.
