I used to get autographs from footballers, now I sell their cars
A man went from selling autographs from footballers to selling their cars. James McConville, 36, from Old Swan, gained knowledge of business through his dad Stephen’s work as a car dealer and took an interest in making money himself. James said: “I always had a business interest. I would be an autograph hunter. I would go and get things signed by all the Liverpool and Everton footballers and then sell them on eBay.”
After finishing school, James headed to Liverpool John Moores University to study business economics but soon realised it wasn’t right for him and returned to work with his dad. He said: “He’s always been involved with cars in some capacity. I was ambitious to take it to the next level."

Their dealership Solo Cars was set up in 2008 and is based in Everton. In recent years, it has become popular with local celebrities, with boxer Liam Smith and Liverpool FC footballer Kostas Tsimikas amongst those buying their vehicles from the firm.
James says he focuses on data and providing good deals on finance to make the firm popular with high-profile names in the area. He said: “The city realises that we care. We intend on being around for a long time.
"My dad is more working from home these days. He’s the guru with the business and knows all about cars. I'm more focused on the data, stats side of things. The reliability and trustworthiness is a reputation you build. Those footballers have come from recommendations from others. We’re seen as people who can handle their profile very diligently.”
James claims the most expensive car he has sold was a £142,000 Mercedes G Wagon that belonged to Arsenal footballer Bukayo Saka. However, he insists that anyone can benefit from Solo Car’s deals. James said: "Our slogan is we sell boss cars for less money. Customers often drive away with cars they never thought they could afford.
“We used to specialise in BMWs, Mercedes and Audis. In more recent times, it’s been about offering great value deals. People are buying value as opposed to prestige these days.”
On what people buying and selling cars should look out for, James said: “Make sure you price check against similar cars online. Think about how you’re financing your vehicle and check the APR rate. You should also buy from somewhere that’s trustworthy. Make sure they have an established online presence.”
James’ success means he can now afford to spend more time with his family. He said: “We no longer open on Sundays. We believe downtime is important. I spend Sundays with my little lad Alfie taking him to football.”
James joked that his dad had “no choice” but to work with him at the dealership. Nevertheless, he believes he made the right call dropping out of university.
He said: “I realised along the way that everyone aims to do what I already had. You need to figure yourself out and what you want.” You can find out more via its Instagram page, @visitsolocars.
