'I used to earn £4.50 an hour in sales now my business is worth £3m' - the remarkable words of a Nuneaton entrepreneur who hopes to inspire others. Jarred Goodyer, who was born and bred in the town, left college after a year.

He ended up working as an apprentice for £4.50 per hour in sales before joining a national recruitment business marked the start of what would be a huge point in his life. From there he went from trainee to consultant to senior consultant, branch manager, area manager, senior operations manager, then national sales manager in just seven years.

But he dreamed of running his own business, so together with his business partner, Paul Brindley, they set up AMJ Recruitment. It was a huge leap of faith for the pair - but it has paid off.

"We set-up the business in January 2022," the 28-year-old explained. "After Paul had worked in the industry for 20 years and myself, ten, we made the decision to go it alone and launch our own recruitment agency.

"It was a scary thought, as my daughter was only one week old when we opened our doors, after hard work, blood sweat and tears, we are not on track to turnover over £3,000,000 this year from a standing start of zero."

If that was not achievement enough, he has been nominated for UK Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2024 at The Great British Entrepreneur Awards. "It's a really proud moment for me," he added. "Myself and Paul work very hard to offer a personal local touch to recruitment for the businesses and people of Nuneaton and Coventry."

They have an office in Coventry but work with firms across the area. Now he hopes his story will encourage others. "I hope that this shows that young people from limited backgrounds can enter business and become successful," he said.

Now he has to wait several weeks before he makes his way to London for the Great British Entrepreneur Awards on November 18 to see if he has won the award. He faces competition from five others to take the title.

The Great British Entrepreneur Awards was set up to celebrate and champion the stories of entrepreneurs across the country.
