Val Kilmer Confuses With Top Gun 2 Post

Val Kilmer has admitted he may have "jumped the gun" after announcing he had accepted a role in Top Gun 2.

The actor played Lieutenant Tom "Iceman" Kazanski opposite Tom Cruise in the 1986 original, and a sequel has been in the works for years.

"I just got offered ‪#‎topgun2‬ — not often you get to say 'yes' without reading the script…", he wrote on his Facebook page on Tuesday .

He also confused fans by appearing to say he would be appearing alongside Gene Hackman and that Francis Ford Coppola would be directing it.

He followed up with a further post which said: "Francis Coppola and Gene Jackman are examples of what an actor says "yes" to. They are not involved. So sorry for the misunderstanding."

Tony Scott, the British director of the original, committed suicide in 2012.

He then edited his original post to admit he had got a little overexcited: "This is a long way off so calm down. This has been talked about for a long long time and being offered a role is very different from doing a role.

"I jumped the gun with my post. I jumped the topgun ... An innocent mistake. It was just such a wonderful phone call with my agent ..."

Earlier this year it was revealed that a script for Top Gun 2 is being written with Cruise's character, Maverick, in mind.

Chief executive of the Skydance production company David Ellison said: "It is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology and fifth generation fighters."
