Valparaiso Forest Fires Churn Smoke Above City Skyline

More than 200 homes have been damaged due to a series of forest fires that ravaged the hills surrounding the Chilean city of Valparaiso, about 75 miles from Santiago.

This footage shows a view of smoke churned up by the fires. According to reports from La Nacion, the initial fire that sparked the conflagration began on January 2.

AFP reported that a drought and strong winds caused successive fires, burning about 19,000 hectares in the subsequent days. Credit: Twitter/jmiguel_2009 via Storyful
