Nina Dobrev may have bowed out from the role of Elena Gilbert on The Vampire Diaries two years ago but as The CW show heads into its final four episodes ever, Elena is very much back on the Mystic Falls scene.

Dobrev previously teased her return with suitably atmospheric Instagram shots of the series finale's script, but tonight (February 13) has seen the first glimpse of Dobrev as Elena in new scenes since May 2015 - and she has a lot of questions.

In the very, very quick 10-second clip, it seems like the series is going back to the beginning for its final stretch, focusing on images of the main characters' high school days from the early seasons, including a framed picture of Elena, Caroline (Candice King) and Bonnie (Kat Graham) during their time on the cheerleading team.

And just as a reflection of Elena can be seen in the trophy case, she has two very important questions for us: "What happened? Why am I here right now?"

Elena was written out of the show at the end of season six when her character was left in a magically-induced coma that saw her life linked to her friend Bonnie's, meaning that as long as Bonnie was alive, Elena would remain asleep.

Of course, she has been mentioned on the show several times and even used as a plot device occasionally in the seasons since, but how she's written back in for the finale is still a mystery.

And Nina isn't the only former star heading back to the show to say their goodbyes - Steven R McQueen will also be reprising his role of Jeremy Gilbert in the series finale.

The Vampire Diaries will end its eight-season run on March 10 on The CW in the US.
